Robotic Surgery Q&A

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery describes procedures that require only small incisions to access the surgical site. This type of surgery offers many benefits over traditional open surgery including:

  • Less bleeding
  • Minimal pain
  • Faster recovery time
  • Less risk for post-surgical complications

The team at Eastside Bariatric & General Surgery uses the da Vinci robotic surgical system to complete a variety of minimally invasive surgeries. This system allows the surgical team to operate with a high level of precision to reduce your risk for complications and maximize the benefits of your surgery.

What type of robotic surgeries are available?

Eastside Bariatric & General Surgery offers several types of robotic bariatric and general surgeries including:

  • Gastric bypass
  • Gastric sleeve
  • Colon resection
  • Gastrectomy
  • Inguinal and ventral hernia repair
  • Organ removal (gallbladder and appendix)

The surgical team is also highly skilled at using robotic surgical techniques to treat benign and malignant cancers, including lumpectomy and mastectomy procedures for breast cancer. They can also create and remove ports for dialysis in people with kidney failure.

While robotic surgery isn’t right for everyone, the surgical team at Eastside Bariatric & General Surgery evaluates your specific needs and your general health to determine if you’re a candidate.

What happens during robotic surgery?

Depending on the reason for your surgery, the team at Eastside Bariatric & General Surgery will make small incisions near the surgical site.

The da Vinci robotic system features robotic arms that operate small surgical tools designed to fit through the small incisions. A small camera sends real-time 3D images of the surgical site to a monitor. Your surgeon controls the arms with a computer console and is able to see the surgical site with a high level of clarity.

Once your surgery is complete, your surgeon closes the incisions. You can expect a shorter stay in the hospital than you might with traditional surgery. The small incisions heal faster and are less painful than the larger incisions traditional surgery requires.
